The Challenge

The mechanical room at the San Leandro Housing Authority had two Cleaver-Brooks hot water boilers and two Cochran steam boilers on the job, with very limited access to the outside, the only available exterior path was a wall exposed to the pool area. Tight space limited the chimney to 18” OD, while the boilers had 12” and 14” outlets, so there was no room for individual chimneys per appliance.

The Solution

Enervex designed the system around a common-chimney solution using a single 16” chimney to serve all four boilers. Two IPVB 500 inline draft fans were installed back-to-back for full redundancy, and the chimney was routed up through a shaft terminating high above the pool area to keep the discharge clear of occupied space.

The Result

Four mixed-service boilers, hot water and steam, two different outlet sizes, now share a single 16” common chimney with redundant mechanical draft, fitting inside the 18” OD envelope the building allowed.
